My heap of scrap did me quite well last year, as chris says, its a race against yourself.
On my first one I half gave up as I got overtaken by 12 riders, but once you realise it doesnt matter if you are overtaken and find a rhythm then the seconds (or minutes) will tumble, after 3 weeks I had lost 2 minutes. It was still a 37min but it was an improvement.

I think my biggest problem will be my old pb, think it was 23:16 for a 10 and i feel i could have gone faster back then on the right day as well.
It is what it is, just have to see what i can do!!
Need to give up work, that's the way forward!!

mr_leemur - don't bring your old pb to SNCC cicuit, you'll just be disappointed. Ours is very much a sporting course with a crap surface, and it's 11.2 miles. If you're under 30minutes you're doing alright. If you're under 27 minutes you're fast.

I think you missed the bit where I said it would be a giggle Geoff, i.e. I'm not all that bothered about throwing money at it/perfect aero position
Yes, a newer frame would be nice but it would be a road frame first as that's what I spend most of my time riding
