This summer Elite road racing is coming to the Fens! Anglia Cycling and St Ives CC are promoting a National A race (Elite,1,2) and a Regional A race (2,3,4) around Whittlesey. The races are part of the Whittlesey day of cycling on 16th June. It promises to be a big event and the organisers are looking for volunteers (this might be marshalling, driving a support vehicle, helping at sign on etc.).

The National A race is a big deal. The organisers are hoping to add it to the premier calendar for next year. This year it is the last big road race before the National Championships the following weekend so expect a very strong field with most of the UK's top riders competing and possibly a couple of continental teams. Who knows perhaps current National Champ., Sky's Ian Stannard might fancy a crack at it. So, this is going to be a big event and volunteering will bring you closer to the action.

If you're interested in helping out on the day, please let me know.

Finally, and before anyone asks, no I'm not planning to volunteer. I'm hoping to race in the Regional A race - afterall, Whittlesey is my hometown!

cheers

Richard

Good luck Richard, this is something I'd love to have a go at but after last year's escapades may need to wait until next season.

Also not sure on volunteering simply for the simple reason this is something I think I need to be getting my camera out for and maybe even calling in a few markers for the loan of some lenses.

Strictly speaking they aren't public if theirs a rolling roadblock closing them off ...

Gareth, I think you are splitting hairs here, they are public roads with rolling road blocks.

Not so - it is illegal to race on public roads. And in any case the argument isn't against paying at all but the extortionate fees charged by some commercial sportive organisations.

As I said Alec 'Spliting Hairs' so it's OK to pay £30 for a road race but not for a Sportive.

That's correct, since £30 probably accurately reflects the cost per entrant of running the race and you cannot legally organise a race on open public roads.

Whereas £30 is extortionate for bumbling along public roads. QED.
