Hi all ,
Recently I attended a voluntary run heart start course organized by the wife of a friend i work with and I and the whole family attended.
I have to say the course was excellent and run by a rapid response unit to train people specifically
how to give immediate assistance in the event of someone suffering a heart attack .
Though I hope and pray that none of us will ever have to use any of these skills it quickly became apparent ( in this instance ) someones best chance of survival lies with the first aider at the scene and not with the services , good as they are.
The one off lesson of about an hour and a half is totally free and i recently saw at the Riverside runners hq that they were doing a similar thing so i thought id broach the subject here.
I will do all the organizing im happy to do so but have no idea of numbers ?? or a venue any suggestions ??
I thought it was excellent and though I am a fully qualified first aider there were things id forgotten !! I think its well worth it and these people give there time freely so what do you think ??? it would be a weekday, thanks rich h

I would be delighted to do something like this. I was also a trained first aider but my certification has lapsed and you can't get too much in the way of the refreshing anyway. Plus for anyone who has done something like this in the past, the best practice has changed in the last year or two. I'd hope to have someone recently trained around if , touch wood, I ever had a problem. Could we do it in the room at the pub in Eaton Socon where the committee sometimes meets? Does it have to be during the day or can it be in the evening - we'd catch a few more people.

I agree Alec you can never have enough of this type of training and as you point out things have changed over the last year or so , the room at the pub sounds fine to me and i would say that it would almost certainly be in the week on an evening as the volunteers who run it would want this , the bottom line is this could save someones life for an hour or so of our time for free.......

Hi to Alec and Rooster,
Sorry to gate crash your conversation but I only registered on the site yesterday and your discussion focuses on an area of concern I have before participating in a club ride. I suffered a heart attack last year and began cycling as part of my rehabilitation program but I have to say I am now hooked!

I try to go out regularily and recently completed a coast to coast cycle ride to raise money for Papworth Hospital. I have been given the all clear from the doctors but have to stay within 80% of my max heart rate. This said I can complete 40 mile rides at an avg of 15mph and really want to join a local club to help me further develop my cycling skills and meet some like minded people in the area. Going back to the original subject topic I assume that both of you are members of St Neots Cycling Club? If so it would be very reassuring for me before 'taking the leap' and turning up for my first ride!
Stuart

Hi Stuart,
Welcome to the forum. Both Rooster and I are members of the club. He is currently the fastest on our Thursday evening time trials and is a very strong rider and triathlete but doesn't do that manny club runs as he is often racing on a Sunday. Whereas I am a mere human (and the webmaster of the site) and I do most of the Sunday runs.
If you can ride 40 miles at 15mph on your own, you'll most likely be OK on our Group 2 runs and it's much easier to ride in the group than on your own. See our FAQs and Club Runs pages (click on the buttons at the top of this page)for more info. Really, the only way to know is to try it and what better day than tomorrow - warm and sunny - 8:30 in the Market Square. If the group does split, we wait for people and we never leave people on their own miles from home. Of course, it would be up to you to monitor your heart rate and ride within your limits, and also everyone rides with the club at their own risk. We are friendly, there is a lot of socialising and like minded people to meet and if you've never ridden in a group before we'll help you learn how to do it.
Hope to see you

By the way, Stuart, just introduce yourself to one of the guys in club kit when you turn up. You'll know me by the notorious fact that I wear a cap and not a helmet in summer

Richard, how many do we need to make it worthwhile for the volunteers to turn up?

Well I could contact them but if I were to guess id say at least 10 minimum . At the one i went to there were about 20 at least, of course as a side note the people attending dont have to all come from St Neots CC , the heart start crew just want to get the training out there at the end of the day.
I took my whole family as did the guy I work with so there was 8 , obviously though lets face it , it would be a very valuable skill to have in any group / race situation be that cycling , running etc where time is of the essence , hence Riverside Runners running one and my post here. rich h
