Simon Elkington wins back to back Handicap Trophies
The final SNCC TT of 2018 attracted 25 riders to the start line including 6 guests on a fine warm evening.
The important issue for the night was the destiny of the 2018 Handicap Trophy and who would win between Simon Elkintgon and Simon Murphy. The former took a 5.5 point lead with him into tonight’s TT and in the end despite Simon M reducing the deficit by 4 points this was not enough and for the second successive year Simon E will be the Handicap Trophy winner. Well done and congratulations for a season of consistent riding and improving on his PB.
Congratulations also to Simon M for a strong second half to the season making it such a close contest and all coming down to the last TT of the season. Both did 15 Thursday night TT’s with Simon E also taking part in the Ashman Trophy.
With a wind predicted from the NW there was an expectation of some PBs on the night. However the wind changed to NE and this did not prevent 3 PBs from Alan Hurst, Tom Muldoon and Norman King – well done gents and notable that they are all in their 60’s
Ryan Witchell, one of our regular guests, posted a 25:16 to be the quickest home this evening followed by our own Simon Elkington with another regular guest, Kevin Stokes, in third spot.
Average time this evening was 30:09 and to date 53 members have taken part this season.
Thank You
A few end of season thank you’s are required to those who allow the rest of us to take part in the TTs and for tonight a thank you to Mark Greenhow who gave up his own ride to help with the pushing off in John’s absence.
Without our timekeepers we would not be able to hold the TT ( or it would need to be shared amongst members ) and Mandy , John and Colin turn out every Thursday no matter the weather to record the riders , allocate the numbers and record the times. Thank you.
Mandy, in addition, provides tea, coffee and home made cake for all riders post the TT and for cyclists this is very welcome.
John makes sure that all the necessary signs are positioned around the course to comply with the CTT and police requirements and Colin takes care of the CTT levies that we are required to pay back to the CTT for running the TT.
Simon Richardson takes care of obtaining police and local council approval for us to hold the TT, Alistair prepares the weekly reports and monitors the PBs with Ruth Stapleton having responsibility for publishing the results on the website.
- 53 SNCC members took part this year
- 20 guest riders
- Leon Bradford and Norman King both did 17 TT’s
- 408 rides this season = 4,569 miles of riding
- Average number of riders / TT = 22
- Average time 30:25
- Fastest time this season – 23:50 by Toby Atkins
Next TT – April 2019 – Only 34 weeks to wait – train well this winter.

Handicap Results
Quick reminder that for the Handicap Trophy points are awarded for the number of riders on the night less Guests and First Time Members. So tonight 25 riders and 19 points on offer. A Handicap Time of 25 minutes or less means that you have either matched your PB or improved on it. A Handicap Time greater than 25 minutes shows how much you are off your PB.
Well done to Alan Hurst for securing the maximum points and taking his PB sub 33 minutes for the first time.

Handicap Trophy – 2018 – Final Table
As noted above this has been one of the closest run competitions for a number of years and only 1.5 points separated first and second with Simon E taking the trophy for a second successive year.
The Handicap Table is a reflection of the number of TT’s you have done and also how well you have ridden against your PB. Good to see Norman King take third slot this year up from 9th place in 2017.
Almost 50 % of the 2018 membership have taken part in the TT this year and thanks to all members who have competed whether you are a regular or this has been your first year.
We look forward to seeing you all again at the start line in April 2019.
