During the G2 ride on Sunday, two empty gel packs appeared to be thrown out of the main group. They may have been dropped by accident as someone struggled to get them into a jersey pocket, of course, but to my eyes they appeared to have been thrown. At least one other rider shared the same opinion.
I should have said something at the time, and regret that I didn't. Accidents happen, I know, but littering is bad form and also an offence. We've got some beautiful countryside around here and we have a responsibility to ensure it remains beautiful so we can continue to enjoy riding in it.
Apologies if this comes across as "holier than thou". That's not my intention, but this has been playing on my mind since yesterday and I felt it appropriate to raise the issue.

Yes I noticed that too and I'm sure it wasn't accidental. I also felt a bit bad about not having said anything but I didn't want to be the one that stuck my neck out because I wasn't sure how other people felt on the subject. It's something I do feel quite strongly about but as can be seen by the amount of rubbish on the roadsides clearly a lot of people think differently.
With some new riders in the group (it wasn't a new rider that was responsible) I suppose it's something we should make clear isn't acceptable.

I absolutely agree.
But why bother with gels on a training ride?

We are all responsible to hold those accountable. It makes me sick enough to see all the crap thrown in ditches and fly tipping everywhere on our country roads.
Mistakes do happen and sometimes wrappers do fly away. All it takes is a small probing question "do you know you dropped your wrapper?"

so rule #78 ??
maybe there should be a club policy that if litter is dropped, the ride stops while it's collected??
the amount of litter you see at the road side is horrible, we need to do what we can to not add to it!

+1 for all the posts so far.
Chucking gel/bar wrappers is not on. Respect the environment and respect the reputation of the club and your fellow riders.

Just done the New Forest spring sportive and was seriously disappointed to see the amount of gel wrappers dumped on the road especially given it's a national park. No wonder the locals were out last night taking signs down if the same happened last year.
