Geoff, A DIY audax is a ride ridding under the regulations of AUDAX UK.
Chris, DIY's do count towards your totals for the season, a lot of people use them for getting their Randonneur Round The Year (RRTY)award
I am in the process of writing what Audaxing entails and the awards you can gain, as it tends to be overshadowed by sportives.

Doing my own reading up on this (as Ian, Chris and Andy Mc got me intrigued) and basically that is what a DIY is Geoff, your local organiser approves it in line with Audax UK requirements, you can then ride it and it counts towards Brevets etc. In effect a properly done DIY is therefore an approved rando ... There is an admin fee I think which is comfortably less than a sportive, and at the end of the day it's your choice of route too ...
The proof can then be "traditional DIY" using receipts etc at check points to prove your time or "DIY by GPS" where you submit the GPX file from your bike computer as evidence of your route and meeting the times/pace approved by Audax UK.
Hopefully Ian will correct any nuances I've missed.

Gareth you have summed it up nicely.
The basic guidelines I use on creating an DIY Audax UK ride are -(this is for a 200k)
Using google maps set it to walking as the mode of transport.
Pick a start point
Select 3 control points
The total distance must be greater than 200k (I think 220k is the maximum 20% leeway)
The actual riding distance will be slightly more as you tend not use the route you create on google maps as this is the guideline for distance for the ride.
The trick is to get the actual ride nearest to the google map one.
I have taken over of running of the R101 100k which is called a permanent event which has manned & information controls to get my organiser validation for permanent events and hope to run a 200 next year.
