Myself, Chris, Dave Wilson and Andy Holt are planning to ride last Sunday's long route next Thursday, leaving the Market Square at 0830. We'll be avoiding the Hinxton ford section.
The plan is to ride at a casual pace of around 15/16mph and stop for elevenses at Teacake on the way home through Shepreth. All are welcome and the relaxed pace will make it a good ride for anyone looking to step up from the medium distance club run. Expect the ride to be somewhere between 4.5 and 5 hours, allowing for coffee, cake and mechanicals.
Here's the route ->

Much of that route is my commute into work and I tend to take the first right in Whittlesford up to the A505, turn left then right at the RAB into Duxford and then onto Ickleton. There is a cycle path for the A505 bit if it's busy but out of rush hour it tends to be ok.
Also the road from Whittlesford to Ickleton is in a reasonable condition.
To get some of the lost miles back i'd go on to Barley after Gt Chishill and then down the Barley Rd to Flint Cross.
Something like this perhaps
Ickleton Route
or if you really wanted to make a day of it head down to Clavering and then back up to Barkway and then on to Barley. Its quite nice and hilly down there and there's plenty of very quiet lanes to get lost in.
Have a good ride

@ Gary - apologies, I thought I'd replied to your comment and have only just spotted I hadn't. Thanks for the ford-avoiding route through Duxford. We'll either avoid Hinxton completely or take it *very* carefully tomorrow.
I'll have my camera, just in case
You're right, there's some great riding down there, it's just a shame it's such a trek to get there and back on club runs. Have you ever ridden east of Saffron Walden? If so, what's the riding like out that way?

You can always just go over the footbridge...

I'd avoid Hinxton, the roads are ropey to be fair.
Andy - only off road on the mtb. Also some of the roads whilst B roads can be quite busy such as the Walden to Thaxted road. As I work in SW I'll ask some of the cyclists here their routes and see what I get back.
Cheers
Gary
