As it seems more of us are coming out now ( which is great ), I thought it worth while posting this. It explains how "through and off" works.
I know we don't ride this way often, but when its done properly its a great way to ride, but requires consideration for those riders BEHIND you and also discipline and concentration.

Very good point/post Tim, this is pretty key for anyone looking to ride the NCRA road races or Rockingham series to understand.

TBH, we've sort of been doing that on the last couple of club runs I've been on. Sort of in that we've been doing short 2 minute stints at the front before rotating. Why can't we do it every week in every group?

strange post Tim,,to me it was a good CG with everyone except me doing their bit,,but i am at a loss to know what you mean, for 99% of the time its was through and off,as usual it all went to pieces up that last hill but then that's all about doing the last 2 k's or so flat out,,as stated above if you have a problem in the group, a shout and a nod would be appreciated, that what it's there for,,see ya demain. ah ah G....

Well yes, but there's a host of reasons why it doesn't happen...

Geoff,
Tony was referring to club runs on Sunday, not the chain gang. If anyone wants to ride through and off on a club run then they can organise that at the time of the club run, it's then up to the group whether they want to ride like that. It's not rocket science !!!

As for the CG on Tuesday, if you watch the video you will see that there are do's and don'ts. One of the "don'ts" was occurring regularly on the CG on Tuesday; hence my post.
A chain gang is very simple and beautiful thing, but you need to consider the rider BEHIND you. In other words, when it's your turn to go through at the front do not speed up and pull over, just maintain your pace, and once you have pulled over you then soft pedal to allow the next rider to come through. If you speed up it makes it very hard for the next rider to come through.
Need I say more ?

Well its helped me, as I didn't really have clue what I was doing other than pedalling where I was told :)
Makes sense now

Very fair points Tim and while we weren't doing full through and off in the "development"/chased group I was trying to ensure people knew to ease their pedalling as they came off the front but at this stage with that group it's about learning good form as well as improving strength/pace so again thanks for putting the link up.

And in no way am I suggesting I've got it down 100% right as I know I don't!

Quick reminder.... Tomorrow's Chain Gang will be of a similar format as lasts week. One group off first and a second to try and catch. Groups and splits will be decided on the square, so please be there for 6:45 sharp with the last group departing at 7.

See you there!!
