we've been sent details of one of the ECCA events as part of the Summer Festival if anyone is interested in putting their map reading & route planning skills to the test - see www.stneotscyclingclub.info/time-trials/ecca-affiliation for full program of events

The Counties Festival weekend always includes a map reading competition. This year it will be on Sunday 3rd May, starting from Hatfield Heath village hall at 10am.
.
The contest is for teams of two (not necessarily from the same club) and will be based on Ordnance Survey Map 167, the Crown copyright 2012 edition or later.
.
Entry fee is £8 per team, with entries taken at the start. All finishers will earn points for their club in the Festival team competition.
.
Competitors have to plot a route from a variety of clues, cycle the route of around 20 miles, answering as many questions as possible, and return to the hall by 2pm. The organisers try to make the route and clues varied and interesting so that everyone from novice to old hand can enjoy the ride.
.
As well as the right map, competitors will need a pen or pencil and might find all or any of the following of use - eraser, ruler, and a pair of compasses (as used for drawing circles). It will help greatly to be familiar with Grid References and Ordnance Survey map symbols – all of which are explained on the map. To speed up plotting of Grid References, bring a piece of card marked off in tenths of a kilometre across and down the card, starting from the top right corner.
.
Organisers this year are Janice and Ken McDonald, who would be happy to give further advice to anyone thinking of riding for the first time. They can be contacted on 01279 813226 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
