I'm a complete novice to this what are the best ones on a kind of budget i.e not over a grand.

Obviously if money was no object I'd get Zipp 404 or similar.

Which are the best places to shop for the bargains

EBay is usually a good place for bargains. I think a couple of people use the Planet X ones which I believe are an aluminium rim with carbon "deep sections" attached so might be good bang for your buck if you're looking for the aero effect more than saving every single gram possible.

Not sure on price of American Classics but again I've seen those on a couple of guys' bikes.

Keep an eye out on sports pursuit they sell fast forward wheels on there regularly at significant discounts. Quite a few club members run them and are usually built on excellent DT hubs.

Other option is of course the used market.

Used older 404 are now good value as they have been replaced with firecrest versions, dura ace c50s too. Reynolds get good reviews too.
