Afternoon all.

I've been lurking for a while, but think it's about time I got my finger out and did some riding.

I grew up in Scotland where I was quite a keen mountain biker until 2002 when I had quite a bad motorcycle smash, and I've hardly ridden much since then. Haven't really done any sports or serious exercise since then if I'm honest, and I'm starting to get a little overweight (5'8" and 13 1/2 st).

I've rediscovered quite a few of my old sports, including skiing and cycling, and am making a concerted effort to get back into them, and get fitter in the process. I studied sport science at college for a while so I'm well aware of what's what and not overdoing it.

Anyway, I've recently taken delivery of a new bike which is more road orientated than The Ancient Kona. So today, I took it out for a shakedown and my first ride in a VERY long time

I'm quite happy with that performance considering, and it'll do as a starting point.

I'm hoping to get out at least a couple of times a week over the next few weeks, but I'm wondering how long it might be before my pace is enough that I could join one of the club runs.

Hello and welcome.

I am assuming that you have read the FAQ's so are aware of the distances we are doing as a club,so pop down one Sunday morning and come out for a ride.

I started with the club as a fellow noob last September by going out on the group 2 rides and thoroughly enjoy them and I like to think that my riding has improved ( no sniggering at the back !!!!! ) and had a great deal of support from the existing membership.

Hope to see you soon

Chris.

I think I could probably manage the slower group rides. An average of 15mph is certainly doable from the rides I did yesterday and today. Distance wise, I don't think 40 miles is outwith the realms of possibility.

I'm on-call this weekend, but I might come along the following weekend and see how it goes. I think the biggest risk of me not making it is the 8:30 start ;)

I look forward to it.

Yeah, nothing to be lost by joining a Group 2 ride. You'll find you can average a significantly higher speed riding in a group than on your own - perhaps something you havent experienced as a mountain biker - and riding in a group is excellent fun in itself. And we pride ourselves on being a welcoming bunch.

A very valid point regarding riding in a group, no it's not something I've done before. Even some of the bigger group rides I've done on mountainbikes we tended to get strung out on the road sections and not really work together,

Well, we'll see what happens.

I expect I'll toddle along for a group 2 run on the 1st July, and try and get a few more rides in myself between now and then.
