My son lives in London and is looking to buy a suitable bike for commuting around the city.
He has a limited budget and will be applying to the ‘Bike 2 Work Scheme’.
Any useful advice welcome.

Clearly it has to be a custom build / retro steel fixie.
Get something cheap and not flashy. Does he have a preference for hybrid or road geared or single speed? there are a lot of options, but I don't think you can go far wrong with Edinburgh Cycles revolution series. I have one of these (gone up in price since I bought it though) very good robust bike

Get a good d-lock too. In my experience Kryptonite are the best. Avoid Oxford locks.

Depending on what 'limited budget' means, I've been VERY impressed with my Whyte. They also do a flat-barred commuter version, and I'd be considering the Cambridge or Portobello, at £899 and £699 respectively. Road bike with MTB geometry, flat bars, slack head angle and short stem mens stable at speed but easy to manoeuvre at slow speed

I'd be looking at something from Pragmasis. D-locks aren't that good imho. I can maybe work something out with Pragmasis, especially if anyone's interested in their shed-shackle as I know the chap that owns it.

One of the Trek FX range would do the job.
Mine has been a great stead and is very good for the daily commute and can even do a bit of touring and the odd (short) sportive if needed.
