Hello there, I'm local and new to cycling (enjoying it hugely though :) )and I've got a quick question if I may.

I'd love to come out on one of your club runs but I clearly don't have enough fitness yet as my current record distance is just over 13 miles (although I reckon I could do 20 without killing myself). So without not wanting to embarrass myself, where do you think I should be before I head over to the market square on a Sunday morning? Crack the 30 mile or so barrier or get a full 40 under my belt?

TIA

Tony.

good morning Tony

ive been a member now for a year, like yourself i hadnt done very much when i started , the clubs group 2 ride generally covers 40 miles on a sunday, so really you would need to be comfortable riding 25 to 30 miles to make the step,

Whilst we never leave anybody on the road, to be fair to others you would need to increase your mileage so you can cope with that sort of distance,

be brave and go ride 25 miles today

Tony,

People are often surprised at how much further and faster they can go when riding in a group, compared to riding on their own, and they are amazed at how much energy can be saved by drafting within the group.

I would suggest a potential option for you is to come along on a Club Run and, if you feel that the distance is going to be just a little too far for you, you can ride for a few miles and then turn off for home at a suitable point for you. Of course, if you are feeling quite comfortable with the pace/distance, you simply carrry on and complete the whole ride with the group.

There really is nothing to lose by coming and trying it out for yourself.

Best wishes and hope to see you soon.

Steve

Tony, you could always start out with us for a few miles then pull off early. You could build up the miles with us until you feel comfortable riding the full distance, you may be surprised how quickly it happens!

best wishes and hope to see you out soon,
Richard

Thank you :). I think it'd be best (and fair on everyone else) that I crack at least 20 miles before I come out with the group. Hopefully that'll only be a couple of weeks or so. In the meantime, if you see a bloke on a Red B'Twin Triban 3 road bike, give me a shout!

be brave and go ride 25 miles today

I would have done (honest!) but we went to Thorpeness today to watch the Tour of Britain and hit the beach for the rest of the day. Exciting stuff and lovely weather :).

Thank you :).

As it happens I think I saw a bunch of you on Sunday morning going the opposite way through Abbotsley, I was finishing off a 17 mile run so I'm getting there...

Tony, you just got to join in mate! turn up and feel the burn. Pull off if it all gets too much.

You will find riding in a group so much easier as long as you stay tucked in.
