Gary Stevens and Norman King entered the Cambrian Audax on Sat 13th Apr. Starting in Leominster and riding out to Machynlleth and back. Around 130 miles and circa 12,000 feet of climbing with only 3 Checkpoints (you couldn't go any other way but up)...
Norman started a little late (start was 0700) and Gary was 10 minutes behind him. Essentially it was 30km flat(ish), stopping in Llanidloes on the way out and on the return steep climbs and descents of the Cambrian plus some other Welsh climbs for 140km and the last 30km flat(ish). Gary soon overtook Norman and except for meeting up a few miles later the last time he was seen was coming back from Machynlleth as I was going down to it. It was cool, very windy and we had a lot of drizzle. So I am not going to bore you with the ride but it was brutal, read my Strava write-up if you want a feel of the gory details. Gary (aka Mountain Goat) competed in the daylight just after 1800 and almost 4 hours later Norman finished in the dark and out-of-time. Luckily Gary booked a hotel, beer and the shower was most welcome and the breakfast was most enjoyable.
