On the subject of the prices charged for sportives I don't think you could go wrong with the one organised by Spalding cycling club on April 28th
10 for a signed route on unfamiliar roads with refreshments, or £9.40 if booked online through British cycling.
I wonder why they do it for that price when they could get away with charging double?

I'm happy to organise a regular long-distance ride, if the interest is there. I've done a variation on the Autumn Breeze that came to around 100 miles, and Richard put together a South Cambs hill route that we could join onto and make into a 100, so we have two routes to start with.

Hi there GS I just wonder if this ridiculous "sportivo" type of event in the UK has gone too far..its mind boggling that organizers will gladly take £20 up to £100 or so (and that's stupid anyway )for cyclist to ride on public roads,,just what has happened to the jolly good "lets meet at freds pub" and go for a sporting 100 mile ride...with social media and internet on tap you do not need much of a brain to find out where these rides could be.I know I am "behind" the times but we did these runs 50 years ago, word of mouth 100 guys pitched up...still what do i know,,G..
I agree with Geoff. Our sportive at £15 is value for money considering the cost of signage, feed stations etc, but some of them are ridiculous (and made more ridiculous by the fact that the Audax community organises events with feed stations etc for a fraction of the cost). People want to be spoon fed with signs every 100 yards and broom wagons and mechanics and heaven's knows what else - maybe the next thing is that you'll be able to pay someone to ride the event in your name.
For example take the 250 mile Manchester to London or the 300 mile Newcastle to London events for which the organisers are looking for a ridiculous £295 fee (
www.rideuk24.com/event2.php). When I was riding 600km audaxes the fee was less than £20 - ok here are differences in what is provided but £295 is just silly. The fact is, the commercial organisers will charge what they can get away with, and cyclists these days seem to have more money than sense. People should pitch up and ride the more extortionate ones without paying in protest.

What's all this twaddle about the 'No Excuses' Sportive was FREE !! Can't get better value than that and we got a free cup of coffee and a goodie bag.
No one is forced to ride the Sportives, so I can't see why you get so upset about it.
It must be an age thing!!

Not specifically about "No Excuses" but about more expensive commercial sportives where a profit making organisation is taking money for riding on the public road. (Many of the European sportives are on closed roads so that's different). I have no problem with events organised by cyclists for cyclists at a reasonable fee - reliability rides, audaxes, club sportives - but all this palaver about goodie bags and broom wagons and peripatetic mechanics and timing chips (if you want to race, then race) and signage every 100 yards is not in the spirit of what cycling used to be (and should be in my grumpy old man's view).

Must admit I'm with Geoff and Alec. I'm all for sportives organised by clubs (as you might expect!) because it is a fantastic way to promote club cycling and raise all important funds. But paying a company £30 plus pounds to ride a route isn't for me.
From my experience I also reckon you'll get a better route on a club than commercial sportive for the simple reason club sportives are planned by people who know the local roads. So if you want to do a good century ride round here, do the club ride in May, don't bother with the Wiggle Steeplechase....

Hi M please read through again..it was a general discussion about sportivo's which had moved on from the Free Wiggle posting ...as stated above, if you have the money to pay to ride on public roads by all means do so, it a "free world" sorry for the pun. I don't think it is a age thing as you state, i think it is a normal thing for cyclist with money to compete with other guys who also have money to burn,, for me, why do them when you can ride 100 miles on your own or with mates for nothing...but there again what do i know..G..

Hi Audax are touring rides for tourists, you start around say 08.00hrs ride the route but NO COMPETITION. they are like long distance group 2 club rides,, but are you man enough to do the 200k. 400k and 600k rides,, sportivo's = balls out. get back 1st or last,,then lots of excuses at Nero's after, I am afraid..G..
