it won't improve my speed and stamina if i can't keep up for more than 5 miles, theres improvements and there's giant leaps across gaps that can't be bridged

I think G that if people thought that way the club would never had introduced a group 2 run on the Sunday club runs and resulted in increased membership and a number moving up to the group 1 ride.

hi ruth,as i said, why not drum up a mid week ride for all, control the pace to the slowest rider and wallow along.....2 years ago,99% of the club riders could not get under 30 minutes for the club TT..the "chaingang" was started and now it is a must for most riders wanting to improve,,but at a cost..nothing is easy...old saying if it works dont mend it..but what do i know...G

Because we don't want to 'wallow along' we want to improve our speed and we all need to start somewhere. There is a wider spread of abilities as we get more and more members and we (I) would like to cater for apeal to not just those who can ride at 22 mph but those of us who aspire to be able to.

hi C well i am not advocating a mass chaingang to accomodate every rider in the club..it is a "chain gang supported by the stronger riders in the club,,if you are not good enough to take advantage then it is not for you...i cannot see how sunday group club runs can be compared with a "chain gang"...G

What I'm saying is that because a group 2 format exists we have progression through the club...looking at myself if you had told me last year that I would be doing the club TT In 32:14 I would have laughed at you.

We all have to start somewhere.....

P.s. I have done the odd chaingang and understood fully that if (when) I get dropped ,it's up to me to improve and hopefully through this year I have.

Here's my view on this for what it's worth.

- owing to different life histories and different genetics we all have different abilities
- the current chain gang regulars would get dropped by a group of elite riders going hard
- riding to the limit of your current ability regularly will improve your current ability
- hanging on to a ride for a few miles that is so far above your current ability that you can do no more than barely hang on will not improve your current ability
- St Neots CC is an inclusive club for riders of a range of abilities, not a clique for a few. We do not exclude new riders to the road nor do we exclude those whose natural talents are less than others. Enthusiasm is the most important thing and substantial improvement is admired
- If someone wants to set up an SNCC chain gang for riders who are a bit slower than the current chain gang regulars, but working on the same principle - go as hard as you can, aim for several mph above club run speed and take no prisoners - then we should applaud it not sneer
- in the same way as we applaud rather than sneer at people who turn up and ride the TT to the best of their ability even if they are 10 minutes slower than the fastest rider
- no-one owns the branding "chain gang"
- so I say to Ruth: good on you for being enthusiastic about this and don't let others put you off
- let me know what the plans are and I'll promote it on the website
