Thanks for all the useful comments
I'm leaning towards the mapping Garmin 800 simply for the longer training rides and eventual Lands End John O Groats and planned for H1 2013

Steve, if you want to consider Geoff's 705 let me know and I'll see if I can make it down to Market Square on a Saturday or Sunday so you can have a look over mine. Only difference I think may be newer maps on the 800 (and touchscreen I think) but as the maps are usually on an SD card you can probably buy the updated version from Garmin.
Just a thought.
(I'd offer to loan it but I've got it on the turbo at the moment so I don't accidentally spend all day on it, Adrian didn't want me turning into "8 hour a day Texan")

I only use it for recording club runs, not directions so we can still have episodes like the weekend of the awards dinner

I have a route on garmin connect for Jogle...I know it the other way round but it might give you a starting point on planning and I could tell you of the good sections or sections that I would have done differently.

As was proved the other Sunday reversing the route throws GPS's into an utter state of confusion.....we should all have them !!!!
