not sure I see anything 'in that nonsense' that prevents (or even advises against) anyone wearing a helmet if they want to? However, what it does say to me (as a rider who almost always wears a helmet when doing 'proper' riding whether on or off-road, but not popping to the shops etc) is to respect the choice of anyone who for whatever reason isn't wearing a helmet.
Given the almost universal wearing of helmets by members whilst wearing SNCC colours, I'm not sure this is actually much of an issue. However, given the fact that it has generated a considerable 'exchange of views' amongst us all (across several social media), it was something that was discussed by the Committee and will be included within forthcoming updates to 'Club Run Arrangements'

In response to several comments regarding the 'social' aspect of a club run, would the return of a coffee stop be considered?
It used to be a prominent feature of every club run (winter excluded) but seems to have fell by the wayside.
This would maybe allow those wanting to make the step up from short to medium groups (something else discussed) a chance to catch their breath and refuel at the half way-ish point.
I appreciate the longer group might not be so keen on a stop and the shorter ride does not really need a stop but how about having a medium coffee stop group?

Hi Dave, well if you are willing to lead the 'coffee stop group' then fine but my preference is to have a coffee at the end of the ride. It's really down to have enough volunteers to lead all these groups and going by recent experience, it just isn't happening.
In an ideal world all of these suggestions are great but we have to remember this is a SNCC World and get real.
Just my thoughts.

What's the worst that can happen ?

Oh and 1 more item I have seen mentioned on the forum which may be good to discuss is Helmets.
I think especially as we are looking to be a "go ride club" encouraging young riders to take up the sport.
I think the club should become ambassadors and make Helmets mandatory at club events (incl club rides)
Rather than discuss the perceived pro's/con's of Helmets, I think it may be best to focus on whether the club with increased visibility want to become an ambassador for "safer riding".
Accidents happen and it is good idea to be prepared as best as possible.
I for one am very passionate about wearing helmets. Maybe the committee would consider a survey from club member's if it needs guidance from its peers.

...then what next ,compulsory insurance ?

4 routes? it sounds like you cant organise 3
solution - as the group with the least problems is the long fast all ride that
not helpful i know nor is dropping people

Hi Gaddy actually that is not a silly statement, i did propose some time ago that there is only 1 club run ride, about 100kms..it is then up to the rider(s) to ride what distance they want, turn back, take a short cut or just enjoy "getting on with it "..its not a new idea been going within cycling clubs for about 100 years ah ah G..

Regards the idea of four club runs, I don't believe that is a workable solution. The routes don't materialise out of thin air, someone has to spare their time to plan and put them together, a fourth route will add to that. Many people would also like to see ride captains return, but the reason they disappeared in the first place was people were not stepping forward to do it. But a fourth distance would mean trying to find more captains.
If the step up from one distance to the next is too big to take on in one go, you don't have to ride the full distance - you can always start out and, so long as you let others know, pull off to ride a slightly shorter route. do this for a couple of weeks and build up. The routes are always published in advance of the day, so it should be possible to plan ahead.
My personal view on helmets is that since it is not a legal requirement to wear one it is personal choice. I do not wish to interfere with someone's personal choice. And, as Chris says, if we as a club mandate helmets where do we stop? Should you also wear Hi-Viz, only allow British Cycling members on rides (because they've got 3rd party insurance through their membership) and so on.

On the subject of helmets: The club has a duty of care to safeguard all members whilst riding in any organised club event - including club runs. All personal views aside the club should therefore be making it compulsory for those taking part to wear a helmet.
Anyone had to pick up brain matter? Save your mates a horrid job!
Acting as Ambassadors is a must especially if still pursuing GoRide accreditation.
Why not consider banking ride routes like St Ives seem to do and rotate - reducing the need to create 'New' routes weekly but giving the possibility of 4 ride routes.

Edd If you want to see a fourth distance, are you willing to help lead it or the other rides?
