Interesting - I don't show enough as it is - however perhaps we could put on a crèche - then yep I would!

On the subject of helmets: The club has a duty of care to safeguard all members whilst riding in any organised club event - including club runs.

For obvious reasons I haven't commented on this thread, but I'd just like to make the point that club runs are informal events where every participant is responsible for themselves. So just to be clear, the club has not and does not accept any formal duty of care to participants.

In response to several comments regarding the 'social' aspect of a club run, would the return of a coffee stop be considered?
It used to be a prominent feature of every club run (winter excluded) but seems to have fell by the wayside.
This would maybe allow those wanting to make the step up from short to medium groups (something else discussed) a chance to catch their breath and refuel at the half way-ish point.
I appreciate the longer group might not be so keen on a stop and the shorter ride does not really need a stop but how about having a medium coffee stop group?

Dave

Hi Dave, well if you are willing to lead the 'coffee stop group' then fine but my preference is to have a coffee at the end of the ride. It's really down to have enough volunteers to lead all these groups and going by recent experience, it just isn't happening.
In an ideal world all of these suggestions are great but we have to remember this is a SNCC World and get real.
Just my thoughts.
;)

I would be more than happy to take a coffee stop group out once the winter is out the way (no one likes stopping in winter)
I can't commit to every week but could definetly do alternate weeks or once a month dependant on interest.

Any takers?

Hi Dave thank you for your offer to lead 'Coffee Stop Group' in the summer but please tell me, are you a current member of St Neots Cycling Club?

Alec,

I am sorry to say but I do think you are wrong on being 'informal' - certainly the website itself pertains and uses the word 'organised' ... Also the fact that newcomers are invited to 'try' before they commit to becoming members.

Certainly the stance from BC is that the traditional Sunday Club Ride is an integral part of affiliated clubs and club activity.

I repeat: the club does not accept any formal duty of care to participants.

From the FAQ page:
"You must accept responsibility for your own conduct and safety (including the safety of your bicycle and equipment) during Club activities and you take part in Club rides entirely at your own risk."

Edd, everyone, club runs are organised in the sense that we put together and advertise the route, however they are not like, for example, a sportive. A sportive is risk assessed, has police notifications, and more important has insurance. You do not have these things on a club run - British cycling doesn't provide any insurance for rides like club runs, chain gangs or any other type of informal social riding. For this reason, I would encourage anyone who doesn't have it to get gold or silver British Cycling Membership - then you will have your own personal insurance cover.

Ultimately the club is not omniscient and every rider is responsible for their own actions and their own well being. We are adults.

In a group we all have a duty of care to each. The club can do things to enhance that. For example, we publish routes in advance so that no one has an excuse for not knowing where they are going or where they are. We have a ride etiquette guide which we ask everyone to adhere to. If people follow that then no one should get dropped. The club could do other things too, such as mandating helmets (as has been suggested). We could also ban headphones, mandate insurance cover, enforce mudguards for wet weather and lights for low light and so on. Other clubs do some or all of these things, but currently we do not. The status quo needn't be set in stone though.

We have an AGM coming up soon. If you want to bring these issues to the floor you are very welcome to. A new committee will be formed too - any member can stand for any elected position and everyone is very welcome to.

We do listen to what is said on places like the forum, but a forum debate between a few members isn't in itself going to change anything. If you really believe in this club, you are passionate about it and want to see change you must come to the AGM and get involved, but remember, be it coaching, organising races, club runs, the sportive, trips away, managing the membership and the website, no one is paid to do any of this. The people who do it, do it from their free time because they are passionate about the sport.

Mark, I will openly admit I am not a paid up member of the club this season, hence my absense from all but a couple of club runs in the early spring and all other events.
My reason being that, unlike previous seasons, SNCC have not be able to offer me anything that fits my ability and interests. If a more social and casual ride such as my suggested coffee stop ride was to take off I would happily be a member tomorrow.
This may sound hypocritical and feel free to tell me to butt out but as a 'lost' member I would like to air my views as to why I have been absent this year.

Hi All, been reading the threads, so here’s my 2 pence worth….
Head protection comes in 4 level’s
1) Hair – no protection and you don’t want to speed up hair loss
2) Skull cap/cycling cap – minimal protection, ok for SLOW cycling
3) Helmet – 100% MUST for anything over running speed
4) Kevlar Armour – for those who LOVE death wish speeds
Life is too unpredictable to second guess, but there has to be a line somewhere between the enjoyment of cycling (flat out, downhill, wind in your face, sunshine, tail wind ++) and wearing a Kevlar suit of armour (LOL, guess).

The Fourth run/Coffee shop ride.
How’s this sound…… 4 routes of 30/40 miles. Fixed routes, fixed mileage, fixed speed. 1 x fixed route North, 1 x Fixed route East, etc, you get the picture. Rotated weekly and cycled at 14 mph, IE more of a leisurely cruise aimed at those who want to cycle, but not want the ‘race’. There would not really need to be anyone to captain these, as they are fixed routes, A leader (anyone with a voice and common sense) could lead this. Twenty miles out = coffee stop……. Or 2 stops, one every 10 miles??
I cycle for fun, I don’t do rain, I don’t do head winds, I don’t do pain. BUT I do enjoy the company when I cycle with SNCC !!
