For obvious reasons I haven't commented on this thread, but I'd just like to make the point that club runs are informal events where every participant is responsible for themselves. So just to be clear, the club has not and does not accept any formal duty of care to participants. On the subject of helmets: The club has a duty of care to safeguard all members whilst riding in any organised club event - including club runs.

Hi Dave, well if you are willing to lead the 'coffee stop group' then fine but my preference is to have a coffee at the end of the ride. It's really down to have enough volunteers to lead all these groups and going by recent experience, it just isn't happening. In response to several comments regarding the 'social' aspect of a club run, would the return of a coffee stop be considered?
It used to be a prominent feature of every club run (winter excluded) but seems to have fell by the wayside.
This would maybe allow those wanting to make the step up from short to medium groups (something else discussed) a chance to catch their breath and refuel at the half way-ish point.
I appreciate the longer group might not be so keen on a stop and the shorter ride does not really need a stop but how about having a medium coffee stop group?
Dave
In an ideal world all of these suggestions are great but we have to remember this is a SNCC World and get real.
Just my thoughts.

I repeat: the club does not accept any formal duty of care to participants.Alec,
I am sorry to say but I do think you are wrong on being 'informal' - certainly the website itself pertains and uses the word 'organised' ... Also the fact that newcomers are invited to 'try' before they commit to becoming members.
Certainly the stance from BC is that the traditional Sunday Club Ride is an integral part of affiliated clubs and club activity.

I would be more than happy to take a coffee stop group out once the winter is out the way (no one likes stopping in winter)
I can't commit to every week but could definetly do alternate weeks or once a month dependant on interest.
Hi Dave thank you for your offer to lead 'Coffee Stop Group' in the summer but please tell me, are you a current member of St Neots Cycling Club?

In my experience kevlar is rubbish but I like your thinkingHi All, been reading the threads, so here’s my 2 pence worth….
Head protection comes in 4 level’s
1) Hair – no protection and you don’t want to speed up hair loss
2) Skull cap/cycling cap – minimal protection, ok for SLOW cycling
3) Helmet – 100% MUST for anything over running speed
4) Kevlar Armour – for those who LOVE death wish speeds
Life is too unpredictable to second guess, but there has to be a line somewhere between the enjoyment of cycling (flat out, downhill, wind in your face, sunshine, tail wind ++) and wearing a Kevlar suit of armour (LOL, guess).
The Fourth run/Coffee shop ride.
How’s this sound…… 4 routes of 30/40 miles. Fixed routes, fixed mileage, fixed speed. 1 x fixed route North, 1 x Fixed route East, etc, you get the picture. Rotated weekly and cycled at 14 mph, IE more of a leisurely cruise aimed at those who want to cycle, but not want the ‘race’. There would not really need to be anyone to captain these, as they are fixed routes, A leader (anyone with a voice and common sense) could lead this. Twenty miles out = coffee stop……. Or 2 stops, one every 10 miles??
I cycle for fun, I don’t do rain, I don’t do head winds, I don’t do pain. BUT I do enjoy the company when I cycle with SNCC !!
